Coughlin Falls, Wins Class
by Jamie Krauss

Elizabeth Coughlin appreciated the opportunity she got to catch-ride Just One Night, and rode him to a second- place finish yesterday and a fifth-place finish today in the 3'6" Non-Professional Division here at the Legacy Cup.

But there’s something really special about winning on your own horse. Unless you fall off first.

"He was being good, and I knew that he could have won, but then he spooked at the end and I fell off. It was just really bad luck," says Elizabeth.

If yesterday was due to bad luck, then she must have had a rabbit’s foot and four-leaf clovers in her dreams last night, because today Coughlin and her own horse, Keep the Faith, clinched the victory with ease, earning scores of 87, 87, 85, and 86.

"I was just really excited. It's nice to win on your own horse."

The afternoon session of the show saw the 3' non- professional division. Dream Date and Rachel Geiger took the top prize with a score of 340 points. Stargazer and Elizabeth Smith ended up a close second, with 338 points; and yesterday's winner, Superstitious ended up third with Caroline Clark aboard.

This placing assured her the overall three foot victory, with a total of 678 points. Stillwater and Betty Oare came in fifth today but second in the overall race, and today's winner, Dream Date, ended up third overall.

The pro and non-pro finals for the three-foot horses will run tomorrow during the day, beginning with the non-professionals. At 1 p.m, the $10,000 Under Saddle will run.

Yes, you heard right: $10,000! That is what makes this show so special -- nowhere else is prize money like this offered for the hunters. There is actually $179,500 dollars up for grabs in all. A horse who wins a class or two has the potential of winning upwards of $10,000.

We all must keep in mind that all of this money is coming from private donations, and most of these sponsors are people within the hunter industry. They are very generous, and to have this much money without any corporate sponsorship is really quite remarkable. These people deserve a great thanks, and anyone else who thinks they might want to help by contributing to this show should contact the American Hunter-Jumper Foundation. All donations are tax-deductible and will make you a part of something very special. Probably the best thing to ever happen to hunters.
